Story behind the song
One day while I was in the studio mixing another song my wife - although she can really sing she does not play an instrument or know the difference between a C note or a G note - stood next to me and said timidly "Honey I think I wrote a song do you want to hear it?" she asked me not to laugh and began to sing this song that just popped in her head. All I could say was "Holy Crap" grabbed my acoustic, figured the chords, structured the song and here it is my wife's first song she ever wrote - pretty cool.
Lyrics
His List
You work from 9 to 5
You never miss a day
Wonder how long it will last
But you get through it anyway
You call at quitting time
Your not coming home yet
But I already hear
The whiskey on your breath
Well I work from 9 to 5
And I have to hurry home
Get the kids all settled in
I Feed them dinner I sing them songs
Keep a smile on my face
I Dry my eyes from the mist
God you know it’s true
We’re the last thing on his list
Got the kids down for the night
By myself I go to bed
My tears begin to fall
It’s the darkness that I dread
When you walk through the door
I see your shadow from the moon
I whisper in the dark
The damn alarm will go off soon
Well I work from 9 to 5
And I have to hurry home
Get the kids all settled in
I Feed them dinner I sing them songs
Keep a smile on my face
I Dry my eyes from the mist
God you know it’s true
We’re the last thing on his list
The sun comes up
The car is packed
I say I’m leaving you it’s time
With tears in your eyes
you shout out to me
I swear I’ll make it right
I’m so sorry baby
I never meant to hurt you or the kids
Please let me prove to you
Your the first thing on my list
Now we work from 9 to 5
And we have to hurry home
Get the kids all settled in
I feed them dinner
You sing them songs
You put a smile on my face
You seal the day with a kiss
God you know it’s true
We’re the first thing on his list
God you know it’s true
We’re the first thing on his list
God you know it’s true
We’re the first thing on his list
