Story behind the song
This is a rough sketch, more later
Lyrics
Fourteen men rode out at first light Packed for a long trip, but not as long as they'd like The open range, the cattle drive That's where these boys chose to live their lives Chorus: ... But other men came ... And cleared the land ... They laid the track ... Then the trains began Half as many men used to ride twice as far The pay was better, their future caught them off guard The cattle stay healthy, fatter on the short drive Nearly every head makes it, but will the cowboy survive Chorus Some of these boys have been at this since nine or ten It's all they know, it's all they've ever been The cowboys long for a fair fight, a chance to win But time is relentless, they'll fade into the wind Chorus

Howdy Jim, I love this song!!!!!!!! You've nailed it to a tee, the mystery, the beauty, the sadness, the simple lonesome life of the cowboy and the loss of that oneness with the land and all around you. Awesome!!!! My friend, this song has a classic appeal, very intelligent in insight....you became at one with that life in writing this one, I can tell. You demonstrate the difference between verse and chorus of living with the land and dominating the land. All the stars I can muster for this one........Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Respectfully, Wade

This is the kind of music I really like, Jim. Hey, why don't you make it downloadable tomorrow, and I'll sneak it into my recorder, and lay a track or two over it? Alan
