Story behind the song
Until I attended miss Katie's funeral I had never beed to one where the deceased was burried in a family cemetery. It is on a hill overlooking her house.
Lyrics
MEMORIES OF KATIE
On a trip into the country where the bible is well known
I met a gentle woman in a charming little home
Her smile was warm and welcoming, her hair as white as snow
That's how I remember Katie not so very long ago
The stories I remember my beloved she would share
Of her grandma Katie's feather bead and combing through her hair
There was giggling at bed time when grandma tucked her in
And the rain a lullabye playing on her roof of tin
chorus
Memories of Katie will keep us by and by
Heaven is a better place so there's no need to cry
Family, friends and neighbors gathering to say goodbye
Sharing memories of Katie, by and by, by and by
When again I met her she made me feel at home
With pictures of her family, the memories of her own
She smiled at every photograph as if they were alive
But for one or two she held back and gave a little sigh
Sharing memories with miss Katie brought a warmness to my heart
Of the simple ways of yesterdays I wished I was a part
But we never can go back there no matter how we try
Except for memories of miss Katie when this day's gone by
chorus
Now the sun it warms the hillside bringing autumn to an end
I look down upon a little house where a family began
It's a picture to remember and every time I hear it rain
They'll be memories of miss Katie until we meet again
chorus
Fond memories of niss Katie by and by, by and by
