This fellow came up and put his hand out
Began right off to inquire about
The fact that I’d brought a banjo into the church house.
He seemed a bit cross and I wasn’t sure why
So I just up and asked the guy
What the problem was then he reared up like a field mouse.
He said “Maybe it me, but it sure seems odd
That you’d bring that thing into the house of God
And I don’t think it’s appropriate for worship here.
Now I’m sure he could tell form the look in my eyes
That’s he’d caught me of guard but to his surprise
I just smiled and shook his hand , said “Brother have no fear”

(See) I’ve given some heed to that very thought
But I remember in Sunday school I’s taught
That the book of Psalms will tell you how to offer praise
It says praise Him with horns and drums and things
And with cymbals and instruments with strings
(Why)They even had tambourines in the Bibles days.
And the harp we’re told was David choice
And it’s got a number of strings of course
Like this banjo here, or so it seems to me.
And a banjo’s a rather curious thing
It’s a drum and harp with four or five strings
Mixed up in one now wouldn’t you have to agree?

Well he sighed real big with his hands in his hips
Then snarled his nose and tightened I lips
Said “I reckon you think you’re smart… sure seems so”
Well I wasn’t real sure what I just what ought to say
So I didn’t say nuthin, I just started to play
“When He All Get to Heaven” right there with this very banjo.
Play Banjo: When we all get to heaven
While I was playing something funny took place
A wee little grin over on his face
And I saw him taping his toe keeping time with the song.
Then some other folks started to gather around
So I just broke in to “Higher Ground”
And all started clapping their hands and singing along.
Higher Ground.
When I got through picking that ole’ brother looked back
And saw that front of the church was packed
With people smiling more than that church had seen in years.
So he stuck his hand out for a second time
And I gave it a shake and he shook mine
I knew right then that this ole banjo had calmed his fears.
So David get your Golden Harp and Gabriel let ‘er Blow
But as for me when I Praise the Lord I’ll just play the banjo
